5 Ways you can Build Your Self-confidence
Whenever I think about building self-confidence, what comes to mind is dealing with insecurities and murdering them completely.
Truthfully, insecurities and lack of confidence go hand in hand.
Insecurities make you uncomfortable in your own skin, make you doubt yourself, and make you feel less deserving of good things and opportunities in life.
And when insecurities start feeding off your self-esteem, your confidence takes a hit.
So yes — the lack of confidence is often birthed by insecurities.
Understanding the Root: Insecurities
Insecurities begin by feeding your mind with lies — lies about who you’re not, or by allowing other people’s opinions of you to settle in your heart. Over time, you start nurturing those lies, living by them, and letting them dictate your life.
That’s why, before you can truly build confidence, you must first identify and deal with your insecurities.
You can’t build a strong house on a shaky foundation — the same applies to confidence.
1. Identify Your Insecurities and Work on Them
The first step to building confidence is self-awareness.
Look deep within yourself and put everything on the table — every fear, doubt, or insecurity you might be dealing with.
Sometimes, you might not even realize that a feeling of discomfort or hesitation is rooted in insecurity. That’s why reflection and honesty with yourself are crucial.
A great way to start is through journaling. Take time to sit with yourself and write down:
- All your fears and why.
- Things you dislike about yourself and why.
- Areas of your life you feel less content about and why.
Once you’ve done this, reflect deeply. On a separate page, list out what doesn’t align with your personality or how you desire to see yourself.
When you can name your insecurities, you can start addressing them.

2. Be Courageous — Even in Your Fears
Courage, to me, is the ability to push through your fears and still do what needs to be done.
Fear held me back for years. But I noticed something: whenever I did something I was afraid of — once, twice, three times — I became more confident handling it.
That’s the secret: you can’t overcome fear by avoiding it. You overcome fear by facing it.
Rather than backing off when fear creeps in, do the thing anyway. It won’t kill you — and you’ll be amazed at how powerful you feel afterward.
Building self-confidence doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time and consistency. You can’t fix every area of your life at once.
Take it one step at a time.
Focus on one area, do the scary thing repeatedly until it no longer feels intimidating — then move on to the next.
That’s how you grow. That’s how you build confidence that lasts.
3. Practice Self-Care
Never underestimate the power of self-care when it comes to confidence.
Taking care of yourself gives you a sense of fulfillment and makes you feel good about who you are.
It’s easy to dismiss self-care as “just little things,” but trust me, those little things matter.
Brushing your teeth, styling your hair, dressing appropriately for occasions — all these affect how you carry yourself.
Think about it: if you walked out without brushing your teeth, would you speak confidently to people? Probably not.
When you look good, you feel good — and when you feel good, your confidence naturally increases.
So, learn to take care of yourself.
It’s not vanity — it’s self-respect.
4. Do the Things You Enjoy
Doing things that you love or that make you proud of yourself gives your confidence a powerful boost.
When you do what you enjoy, it fills you with energy and excitement. You feel capable, productive, and fulfilled — all of which feed your self-confidence.
Even when you don’t necessarily love what you do, try to find joy in the process. Make the experience enjoyable. Celebrate small wins.
Give yourself credit — even for the smallest efforts.
You might think, “It’s nothing big.”
But every little thing you accomplish adds up, building your confidence step by step.
That’s how you grow — little by little, one victory at a time.
5. Make Jesus the Center of Your Life
If you’re a Christian, this is the most important part.
Building confidence outside of Jesus is building on a shaky ground.
When Christ becomes the center of your life, your confidence shifts from self to faith — from “I can’t” to “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
True confidence isn’t just about believing in yourself; it’s about believing in who God says you are.
As you build your confidence in Him, you’ll notice a beautiful transformation — fear fades, boldness grows, and your self-worth becomes unshakable.
Building self-confidence is a journey, one that requires patience, self-awareness, and faith.
Start by facing your insecurities, practice courage daily, care for yourself, do the things that make you come alive, and most importantly, root your confidence in Jesus.
You’ll find that with time, you’ll walk taller, speak bolder, and live freer — not because life suddenly got easier, but because you grew stronger.
